STELLA CHARMAN MA, MSc, DipHSM
Stella is a Director of CAMHS Consultants Ltd. She is a member of the Children & Young People Group in the National Institute for Mental Health - England (NIMHE) and speaks for CAMHS on the National Patient Safety Agency’s External Reference Group for Mental Health. Stella, along with other colleagues, formed CAMHS Consultants Ltd in August 2003. This followed the closure of the Institute for Applied Health and Social Policy (IAHSP) at King’s College London, for which she had developed a programme of work around CAMHS over a period of three years. Prior to this she had worked independently, with an increasing focus on CAMHS, and for the Young Minds Consultancy Service.
Stella has a first degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and joined the National Health Service in 1978 as a management trainee. She spent fourteen years as a general manager in a variety of hospital and community healthcare settings before taking a career-break to adopt two children. Instead of returning to full-time employment in the NHS, she established herself in 1995 as an independent management consultant in health and social services. Stella was awarded an MSc with distinction in Social Research by Surrey University in 1998.
As an independent consultant, Stella has worked on several wide-ranging reviews of mental health services for both adults and children, and on the development of multi-agency service strategies and partnership arrangements. She has experience of working on operational and strategic problems with Health Authorities, Trusts and Social Service Departments. Stella has also worked at Regional Office level in supporting policy implementation and performance management. She is also an experienced facilitator and mentor.
